When I began this journey, I was only walking by faith, not by sight, because I just couldn’t see where we were going. Now it’s like the fog is clearing, and I can see through the foggy mist, in the distance, a mountain.

Skyline College Barbering Program

By Guest Blogger Michael Kane

Ceasar and Dean Michael Kane

Tonight I had a straight razor head shave from Ceasar in the Barbering Program.  He was great, well trained, excellent customer service but that was just the beginning. It was a rare opportunity as dean to be able to be immersed in one of our programs for over an hour and I want to tell you what I experienced.

As I mentioned, my service was top notch, the whole atmosphere reminded me of the joy of going to the barber shop with my grandpa as a kid. The facility is excellent and the students understand their task. As I was being shaved,  I got to watch everything going on.  Eli Lopez and Cam Dinh do an excellent job.  They were supportive of the students but with a non-intrusive light touch, providing guidance when necessary and constant reassurance and positive reinforcement. They have obviously done an excellent job training the students. Along with Jayson and Cassidy who also work with these students.

As I was leaving Eli asked how it went. I told him that it was a great class, very professional, skilled and doing a great job. This interaction happened in front of all the students because they were short on models so Eli had put himself in the hands of one of his students. A generous act and even more a massive show of confidence in his students. I finished my comment to Eli by sharing my favorite observation tonight.  The students were incredibly supportive of each other. Giving encouragement, sharing tips, interacting with each other’s clients with words like, “your in good shape he’s got great hands,” or “she’s really talented.”

Then the best thing all night happened, one student hearing my comment turned to me and said, “of course Dean, we’re a family.”

This is representative of our Cosmetology, Esthetician and Barbering Programs.  Under Cassidy’s leadership and the amazing work of our faculty and staff, these are the students (professionals) that they produce and I’m incredibly proud of the work they do and I wanted to let you share in the wonderful experience I had tonight.

Dr. Lopez talks to students on Opening Night

We had a great opening night and first few weeks. Over 80 students in adult education came by for a hot meal, and to get to know our Skyline outreach team and to hear what we have to offer. We also conducted a survey of the students to see what they might like us to bring to them in terms of education and services.

Thanks to the owners of Super Duper Burgers for their generous donation of food. Looks delicious!
With the very generous Chick-fil-A owners. We are going to stay connected and do great things for our students!
With Jefferson High School Principal, John Harrigan and members of the Daly City/Colma Chamber of Commerce board.

Random Run-ins

I was so lucky to catch John Ulloa’s inspiring guest lecture in the CIPHER classroom! I loved the lecture, and the students resonated with the Professor’s words through engagement during the Q&A.
