Fog creeps quietly in,
Blurring sights, muffling sounds,
Mystery unfolds.

Skyline College Black Student Union (BSU) Has Curated an Amazing Event Line-Up for Black History Month
The entire administration is blown away by the efforts that went into creating a large scale compilation of events that are educational for everyone. Special thanks to BSU, Brittney Sneed, Christopher Wardell, ASSC, and EVERYONE else who helped make this month happen. The theme is Celebrate Black History, Resistance & Excellence! I hope you join in as many events as you can. Plus the merch is beautiful! I bought two tees and now I have to buy another for my daughter! Click here to learn more. Students Connecting with Students
Professor Arnetta Villela-Smith Helps Students Feel Welcome
Professor Arnetta Villela-Smith joined Skyline College to Co-Chair a new department: Ethnic Studies! We are so excited she joined us at Skyline College alongside Professor Roderick Magbual to grow our curriculum and to offer excellence in teaching. A Bay Area Reporter article was recently published about our program and Professor Villela-Smith. Click here to read the article. Here’s an excerpt: [Skyline College] is offering students six courses examining the “experiences and contributions of people of Indigenous, African, Latinx, and Asian descent” in the United States. Three of the courses will delve deeper into race and gender, “Borders and Crossings,” and Filipina/o/x communities.…Being at the helm of the department, Villela-Smith said, “I feel like it’s a possibility module,” about not having the opportunity that younger generations have now to see a nonbinary, butch, stud, or masculine-of-center female professor or teacher. “I can be a professor and I can be comfortable in my skin. It’s a very beautiful thing.”
Dr. Vinicio Lopez Leads the Growth of the Neighborhood Center
In Fall 2022 Skyline College partnered with Jefferson Union High School Adult School in Daly City to inaugurate the Skyline College Neighborhood Center. The program extends the College’s presence into strategic locations embedded in the community and Skyline’s service area zip codes. Skyline College’s Neighborhood Center supports Adult Ed courses offered by Jefferson High’s Adult School, and provide services directly into the community at a location that is convenient and central to many of those for whom the requirement to travel to the campus proves a significant barrier to access. This proximity will not only increase the local outreach and access efforts within the community but will also enhance community awareness of the Skyline’s many services and programs that can be accessed remotely or at the campus. So far, as a result of the launch we have made many friends and hosted a campus visit of our Adult School students who would not have normally thought to come to Skyline College!
College Governance Council
College Governance Council (CGC) meets each month to conduct the major business of the college. The voting members include the leaders of each of the four constituency groups: ASSC, Faculty Senate, Classified Senate and Management Council. Recommendations are made to the President. In January, we voted to create a work group to address the many gaps and inconsistencies in our procedures. And we currently have a number of active Task Groups working on behalf of CGC to bring final recommendations forward: Gender Equity, Antiracism & Equity, Participatory Governance, Climate Review, and Civic Mindedness. In addition, all of our constituent committees are working to bring recommendations to CGC. We anticipate a number of college plans coming to CGC before the end of the calendar year.
Free Form Fridays
We had enlightening conversations in January and February! Free Form Fridays with the President is intended to provide us with a virtual space to connect. Anyone is welcome to join throughout the session which keeps the conversation interesting!
Upcoming dates: 03/03, 04/07, 05/05. Zoom In!
